Brunch at The Bauer Kitchen

Today we had an impromptu brunch at The Bauer Kitchen in Waterloo.

The brunch menu is quite small, but lots of variety, unless of course you are a vegetarian, but then I guess it makes sense for a restaurant with "butcher" in the title.

To start off we had a onion rings with gorgonzola dip. The batter on the rings was crispy on the outside, but there was too much of it and the rings resembled donuts, rather than rings. The gorgonzola dip is made in house and is the star of this dish. If going to TBK, I suggest asking for this dip on your salad and to replace ketchup with your fries. My brunch date had the special for brunch which was corned beef, sauteed with veggies, smoked cheese buffalo mozzerella melted on top, then on top of that 2 eggs ordered for individual preference. The dish had good ingredients, but too much oil, at least 2-3 tablespoons of excess oil at the bottom of the dish. I ordered the only vegetarian entree option, gnocchi in burnt butter with sage and rosemary and butternut squash, the dish was flavorful, but nothing out of the ordinary or exciting.

Now a quick note about portion size. I think the purpose of "brunch" is to take two large meals and roll them into one large feast...so going home hungry after brunch, and after paying upwards of $50.00 should not happen. The portion sizes were much too small for a brunch menu, and the prices too high for what you get on your plate.

Finally, we struggled for about 5 minutes trying to get the industrial pipe sensor taps to work in the washroom, it was a true test of patience and we were unable to get our hands cleaned properly with the weak water pressure.

All in all, nothing special about brunch at TBK.

  1. I am so happy to have stumbled upon this blog! Kitchener-Waterloo can be such a minefield for dining; one never knows what to expect beyond the websites and posted menus. I appreciate that you included both regular and vegetarian fare. Bauer Kitchens is relatively new and the fact that they are located in the new Vincenzio's building makes me often wonder if they are trying to make the rent back out of the paying customer. Thanks for your candor. I will be returning to this blog again.
